What is a Floppy Disk, its Parts, Types and Uses

The floppy disk was invented in 1967 but over time its use decreased. But even today all the people using Floppy Disk need to know about it, so on this page we have shared the information about Floppy Disk Drive.

What is Floppy Disk

Floppy disk is a medium to store data which we storage device It is also known as Floppy Disk, Floppy or Floppy Disk. use this computer It is used to store electronic data like a file.

It takes only a tenth of a second for a floppy disk drive to directly receive any piece of data. This device is made by coating a circular piece of thin plastic with a magnetic material.

when the floppy disk computer When inserted into it, it rotates in its cover so that data can be stored on it. It reads the stored data and transfers it to the computer memory.

History of Floppy Disk

To Floppy Disk Drive Allan Sugart By IBM was built in 1967. It was the first type of hardware storage device that was portable. When it was first invented users CD ROM Were unable to write the data like.

Then its diameter was 8 inches which was later called Diskette. This disc was capable of storing only 80 KB of data but later versions had the capacity to store up to 800 KB of data. Later its size was reduced which was 5.25 inches hence it came to be called Disk.

The 5.25-inch disc was first used by IBM in August 1981. personal computer was done on. Improvements in magnetic recording media by the 1980s, as well as improved read, write, and head designs, led to the use of much less flexible 3.5-inch 1.44 MB capacity floppy disk drives.

For some years, the size of floppy disk drives in computers was both 3.5 inches and 5.25 inches. But by 1990, the 5.25-inch version had become popular.

Floppy Disk parts

1. Mechanical Frame :- This opens the protective window of the floppy disk so that the frame of the floppy can be ejected at the press of a button. For this, a spring is used in it, which takes out the frame holding the floppy from the floppy drive.

2. Circuit Board :- The circuit board contains all the electronics so that it can read and write data from the floppy, as well as handle the stepper motor so that the read/write head can reach each track.

3. Stepper Motor :- It measures Stepped Revolutions of Motor Precise No. By which the Read/Write Head Assembly can move to the proper track position.

4. Read / Write Head :- These are found on both sides of the disc. In this, the work of reading and writing is done with the help of head. Their second part is slightly wider, which is used to remove the data.

5. Drive Motor :- It is a small motor that is centrally attached to the metal attached to the floppy and it spins about 300 and 360 times in 1 minute. It is one of the most important parts of the floppy disk.

6. Square Plastic Jacket :- The square plastic jacket serves to protect the floppy disk from the bad effects of the environment.

7. Read / Write Window :- In this, the work of reading and writing is done with the help of head.

8. Hub Ring :- Hole in the middle of the floppy disc through which the Hub Ring does the job of holding the Spindle Ring of Metal when the disc goes in.

9. Write Protect Notch :- With Write Protect Notch, if the tab is closed, then the information saved in our disk is completely safe. No one can remove or change it.

10. Index Hole :- There is an index hole in a soft sector disk and there is a different hole for each sector in a hard sector. Index hole works to tell us about soft sector disk and hard sector disk.

Technical Terms of Floppy Disk

1. TPI :- The full name of TPI is Track Per Inch. It is the number of tracks per inch that tells the density of the data. The bigger it is, the more data you can store in the floppy disk.

2. Track :- The disk of the floppy disk is divided into several circles and numbers are given to it. Such balls are called tracks. The outermost circle has a number of 0 and this number increases inward.

3. Cluster :- Cluster is the smallest unit of disk that gives any order to the file.

4. Sector :- Sector is the smallest storage unit of any floppy disk. And there are many sectors of this type of track. Each sector is given a number.

Sectors are given two types of numbers.

  • Soft Sectoring :- In Soft Sectoring, sectors are created by software.
  • Hard Sectoring :- There is a hole to identify this type of sector.

FAT : The full name of FAT is File Allocation Table. It contains information about all clusters. Without this, we cannot use the disk and the computer is also unable to access it because it contains the address of any file.

Types of floppy disks

There are many types of floppy disk drives that came in the market and went away with time due to not being used much.

8 inch drive

In the early 1970s, the 8 inch was the first Floppy design. Which was used as read only and then gradually became capable of both reading and writing. Its initial capacity was 100K Bytes (100000 Characters).

5.25 inch floppy (mini floppy)

This floppy disk drive was invented during the 1980s which was in widespread use on PCs. The 5.5-inch floppy disk drive was also included on computers in the early 1990s. This disk was also used to read / write data.

The storage capacity of this disc depends on its single and double side which holds its record in density. It is of two types.

DSDD Its capability – 360 KB

DSHD Its capacity – 1.2 MB

3.5 inch floppy

The 3.5-inch local disc is also called the modern Floppy. Through this Floppy Disk, data is read / written at fast speed.

It is small in size but has a lot of storage capacity. This disk can store 1.44 MB of data on High Density Disk and 730 KB on Double Density Disk.

Zip Drive

In the mid-1990s, Lomega Corporation introduced the Zip Drive. A zip disk was capable of storing 100 MB, 250 MB and even 750 MB of data on a single disk.

The use of the Zip drive was limited because it was too expensive, which prevented it from becoming a popular storage device and eventually led to its decline.

Advantages of Floppy Disk

Floppy disks do not have much storage capacity which makes them unsuitable for storing high-resolution photos, music and videos etc. Although floppy disk has some drawbacks but they also have some advantages which are as follows:

Floppy disks are small in size and portable which is one of the main advantages of floppy disks. A 3.5-inch floppy is smaller in size than a CD. Also, they do not require much space in terms of transport.

Floppy disk also prevents erasing or loss of data due to any accident because the data is present inside it. Its portability gives users the advantage of transferring small size files like documents from one device to another.

Boot Disk

computer one Operating System tries to boot from which the Boot Sequence is called. A floppy drive or CD drive or other disc does not have a boot program.

Floppy disks also provide the advantage that they can be converted into boot disks with the help of loading. Thereby a convenient program can be stored on the disc.

There is also a significant advantage in the case of data storage devices with older computers. Because old computers do not access other data storage devices.

floppy disk disadvantages

1. Speed

The speed of data transfer in floppy disk is very slow. When data is being transferred from the floppy disk to the computer, it can take a long time.

2. Storage Capacity

Floppy disk drive has limited space to store data. It offers very less storage capacity as compared to the storage devices of today.

3. File Corruption

File corruption is one of the main disadvantages of floppy disks. Floppy disks are affected by the external environment. Thus the data stored on it may get corrupted.

Furthermore, floppy disks do not provide much protection as compared to any other storage device because they are more vulnerable to viruses that can cause file corruption.

4. Reliability

Over time the use of floppy disks decreased or stopped until the 2000s. After this time it becomes an unreliable source of storage.

5. Physical Damage

Plastic Casing is used to make Floppy Disk Drive which is very delicate and flexible. If someone grabs it without proper care it can break easily.

Floppy Disk Questions and Answers

How was the Floppy Disk Drive used?

In the early days of computers, floppy disks were only used to back up information and create a new program on the computer because the computer had a CD ROM, drive and USB were not included.

The program was able to be installed from a floppy disk if the size of a program was 1.44 MB. Similarly, most programs whose size was smaller than 1.44 MB required a floppy disk.

Today’s use of floppy disk

Floppy Disk is now out of date and they USB and others like Network File Transfer storage device has been changed from. Now many people use CDs and USB flash drives to back up or record their data.

Since the floppy disk drive was the medium for storing data. CDs and USB flash drives have been introduced in modern times in the form of zip drives.
