Engineers at Johns Hopkins University in the US have created a type of molecule called supramolecular filaments, which are capable of stopping the virus from getting in its way. Honggang Cui, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering, said that these filaments would act like a sponge to eliminate the corona virus before it could take hold of the cells in our airways.
He also told that sprays can prove to be helpful for people in public places, where the risk of spreading the infection is high. It can block the virus for an hour or two.
Corona enters the body through ACE2
Explain that the filaments have a receptor called angiotensin converting enzyme-2 or ACE2. It is found in the cells of the lining of the nose, the surface of the lungs, and the small intestine. The corona virus mainly enters our body through this receptor.
In fact, the virus enters this receptor in the same way as a key enters a lock. Once the virus locks onto a cell, it prevents the cell from performing its normal functions, leading to infection.
Filament named FACE2 developed
The team has developed a new filament named FACE2. It acts as a decoy binding site to inhibit the virus. In this, each filament offers multiple receptors for the corona and silences the biological functions of ACE2 to avoid potential side effects.
Researchers said that it can be brought in the form of a nozzle or an oral spray. It is capable of stopping any variants of the virus. Along with this, the researchers have also described this molecule as safe. Furthermore, another researcher also pointed out that this FACE2 can also be used on other respiratory viruses that use the ACE2 receptor to infiltrate cells.
