Google is rolling out a new update to its high-end Pixel Buds Pro headphones. Bigger than the last two, this new update will focus in particular on the sound quality of calls.

Google intends to improve the sound quality of calls made with its Pixel Buds Pro. This is what we learn from 9to5Googlewhich reports that the company is implementing a new update, bigger than those launched since the worldwide release of the headphones, in July 2022. As a reminder, the latter had made it possible to install a 5-band equalizer on the Buds Pro (and better left/right balance) in October, then tech Space Audio in March.
According to a source interviewed by the specialized media, the next update of Buds Pro, described as big, will therefore this time focus on the quality of calls. And in this case, Google would rather see things big. In particular, the company would like to implement a technology similar to its premium headphones Clear call introduced on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro in December last.
Premium call quality to match the Pixel 7
As a reminder, this technology filters out background noise. It improves the quality of the voices so that we can better hear our interlocutors in noisy environments, such as in a city center, in transport or in a department store.
On the Pixel 7s, it relies on the Tensor G2 chip to function and is unable to support VoIP calls from messaging apps. It is unknown at this time how its equivalent will work on the Pixel Buds Pro, if the system will be fully integrated into the headphones, or if, on the contrary, they will have to pair with a Pixel smartphone to take advantage of it.
Either way, this big new update to the Pixel Buds Pro will bring support for “ Super Wide Band speech “. This function also contributes to improving the quality of voice exchanges by increasing them from 16 to 32 kHz. To do this, Google has already begun to integrate this functionality into Android’s Bluetooth functions. In this regard and as pointed out 9to5GoogleTHAT Super Wide Band speech looks like a big improvement on HD Voice technology (even enabled by VoLTE).
Does hearing wellness work as a bonus?
” Super Wide Band voice is the maximum audio bandwidth provided by 5G voice services and many over-the-top (OTT) voice services », details for its part of the Bluetooth SIG. Pending further details, we understand that it will likely require adjustments at the level of 5G operators for this technology to work optimally.
Expected in the coming months without further details for now, the next update for the Pixel Buds Pro should finally equip them with new well-being features related to hearing. We don’t know the exact details, but 9to5Google believes that it should make it possible to analyze what we listen to and at what volume in order to make recommendations for hearing conservation. Perhaps Google will even go ahead with this bouquet of features… even if that means looking to Apple to offer an analysis of environmental sound levels.
